Study shows teen alcohol and pot use is on the rise after a ten year decline

A study released yeasterday showed that teen drinking and drug use is on the rise.  This is especially troubling since these numbers have been falling for the past ten years.  Read the full report here.

I am a few years away from teenagers and to be honest I really can't decide the best way to handle the drinking and drugs.  I would never, nver be the mom buying the beer as long as they stay at my house; but could I be the mom that would pick up my kid no questions asked if he needed a safe ride home...maybe.  I can't decide if it's better to tell kids it is terrible I do not approve it is totally forbidden and unacceptable or to recognize it is everywhere, I don't approve, but it may happen and deal with it as it comes.

I am crossing my fingers for teens that are far too busy studing to go to any parties anyway (I can dream, right?).

How do you (or will you) handle the issue of drugs and alcohol with your teenagers?

Drug dealers do not abide by minimum age requirements and other state laws regarding underage consumption. Many kids throughout the Country have reported that it's easier to get illegal drugs than alcohol. Liquor stores are licensed and usually abide by all laws.

The only way to lower the consumption by teens and other young adults is to legalize and regulate the drug industry.

The 'War on Drugs' has been going on over 100 years now. Drugs are more prevalent, cheaper and more common thanks to our illogical laws. Prohibition does not work, nor will it ever work. We need to wake up and smell the smoke on the horizon. Regulation is far better at preventing underage use than an outright ban -- which only moves the business underground.

The 'War on Drugs' is an abysmal failure.

Regulation and Taxation is a far superior alternative to prohibition.
